Built as a coaching inn on the main Bristol to Bath road in 1738, the White Hart may even have replaced an earlier hostelry on the same site.

The former pub in Brislington is undergoing a transformation over the summer of 2010 to make it into state-of-the-art studios and performance rooms for the Bristol School of Performing Arts.

The acting, dancing and singing company bought the building in February, but as it is grade II-listed, and permission needed to be granted from the council to develop it, progress has been slow.

The three-storey building is being refurbished into as many as ten studios, including four large dance and performance spaces with smaller rooms for one-to-one tuition and voice coaching. It will be open seven days a week and there will also be a refreshments area and about 50 parking spaces at the rear. One day, the school hopes to offer full-time performing arts courses.

The well-known pub on Brislington Hill was once the scene of bare-knuckle boxing matches and the large car park used to be the village green. It was sold by Punch Taverns after a number of years on the market.

Had lunch there today. Large pub with plenty of space between the tables. Very nice burger, and the steaks looked good too. Staff friendly and efficient.

This was a pub much frequented by the local coal miners. It was originally called the Crown and Horseshoe.

Rebuilt on the corner of Greville Road around 1905 the Hen and Chicken was rebuilt again in the 1950s having suffered extensive bomb damage during the war.
